The Best Gift Ever to your Loved Ones – Part 2

Posted by : Blyton Pinto | Relationships

In part 1 we discovered that God is the best and perfect gift you can give to your child or loved one. Though this knowledge is necessary, it isn't sufficient. In the second part of this series, we learn how to gift God to someone. It's not a one-off action but a lifelong process

A gift

All Christian denominations have some form of formal process to initiate people into the faith. For example Baptism, First Holy Communion, Confirmation etc. Add to this, Sunday Catechism, Mass, family Rosary and other forms of prayer and worship. These formal processes are very important for introducing someone to God and are indispensable. Without them, the transmission or passing on of the Faith to the next generation cannot happen. Once a person is part of a church, he/she has opportunities to grow in faith through prayer, religious education, and fellowship.

But outside of this formal process, there are vast opportunities for parents or individuals like us, to make God real, alive and active to our children and loved ones. We need to bring God out of the formal prayers, religious education, and churches and immerse Him into our daily grind, challenging relationships, social circles, good and bad times, sickness and health. God must be like a real person sitting next to you, whom your senses can perceive, whom you can talk to, whose presence you can feel. How do you do this?

Romans 10:17 - "Faith comes from hearing, and that means hearing the word of Christ"

In short, it means you can gain and increase your faith by reading and hearing the Bible because the Bible is the word of Christ, written by humans but inspired by the Divine. Just as any action has its own consequences, faith leads to another important behavior

Romans 1:5 - "Through Jesus, we have received grace and our apostolic mission of winning the obedience of faith"

The obedience spoken about here is the obedience that comes through the virtue of faith. Just as Abraham's faith leads him to obey God's instructions and almost sacrifice his son Isaac or as Mother Mary's faith in the prophecy about the Saviour lead her to obey the angel's annunciation to her, in spite of the dangers in it.

Once you are rooted in such deep faith, it's only natural that actions spring forth.

James 2:17 - "In the same way, if faith is not accompanied by good deeds, that faith is quite dead"

and

John 15:14 - "You are my friends if you do what I command you"

and again in

John 14:15 - "If you love me you will keep my commandments"

What is God commanding us to do?

Matthew 22:37 - "Jesus said to him, "You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your minds. This is the greatest and first commandment. The second resembles it; You must love your neighbor as yourself"

In concluding, the sure way to gift God to your children is by starting to pick up that neatly stacked away Bible daily and start reading it, prayerfully. Constant and consistent reading, backed up by the regular reception of the Sacraments and praying of the family Rosary, will implant such a deep faith in them, that they will bear the fruits of obedience and actions pleasing to God, a hundred or a thousand fold.

Do you read the Bible regularly? What do you think God is trying to do with you? Do you hear Him speak to you through the Word?

  1. Both part 1 and part 2 of the article are lovely Blyton. We find focus and making family prayer time engaging for the kids a challenge but are trying. This article is a good reinforcement of what our roles as parents have to be.

    1. Hi Amanda, thanks for sharing your thoughts. We have to build one another by our own experiences. Your sharing has also reinforced our beliefs.
