Why Should We Be Thankful To God?

Why Should We Be Thankful To God?

Right from our childhood we are taught to say “Please, sorry and thank you” to others. But how many of us train ourselves or our family to thank God?

Many years ago while attending a retreat, the priest said something that left a deep impression on me. He said when we go to a stadium to watch a cricket match or a musical event, we generally don’t sit quietly with our mouths shut or arms folded. We don’t stick to our seats and ignore all the others around. On the contrary majority of us would scream or shout or chant with the crowds, throwing our hands in the air, beaming with smiles and laughter and immersing ourselves completely into the experience. We give all our energy and support to the sports people or celebrities, who are mortals like us. Therefore, how much more reason we have to vocally and actively praise and thank our God who gave us the very hands, legs and breath, because of which we are able to stand up today?

Even today, though a couple of decades have gone by, I vividly remember that priest’s words. I think these words jolted me out of my old nature where I never really thought of God in my daily practical life. I began to feel the need to thank God, for every little or big thing.

“No duty is more urgent than that of returning thanks” - St. Ambrose

Don’t we WhatsApp our friends the same night of a party to thank them (if you were invited) or for the gifts you received (on your special occasion)?. There is so much truth in what St. Ambrose said. There is no reason to delay thanking God.

“Every joy and suffering, every event and need can become the matter for thanksgiving which, sharing in that of Christ, should fill one's whole life: "Give thanks in all circumstances" (1 Thess 5:18) - CCC 2648

Why should we be thankful?

1 Chronicles 16:34 - “Give thanks to Yahweh, for He is good, for His faithful love lasts forever”

If someone does a good deed to us, out of courtesy, we thank the person. But consider this - God is goodness itself. Totally and completely. We really ought to thank Him for this simple fact.

1 Thessalonians 5:18 - “and for all things give thanks; this is the will of God for you in Christ Jesus”

Many of us pray for God’s will to be done in our lives. Being thankful to Him is one such will.

Hebrews 12:28 - “We have been given possession of an unshakeable kingdom. Let us, therefore be, grateful and use our gratitude to worship God”

Actually, we don’t need any reason or justification to thank God. But if we look at our lives, we cannot but notice the millions of reasons to thank God for. If you are convinced of the need to thank God, find out how to thank God.

What are the top reasons for you to be thankful to God? Is it difficult for you to find reasons to thank God in your day-to-day life?
