What Should I Pray For?

What Should I Pray For?

Posted by : Blyton Pinto | Catholic Life, Spirituality

Most people who practice a Faith, have the habit of praying regularly. Prayer can take many forms; different occasions require its own form of prayer. This Lent, uplift your prayer life by including these 3 prayers in your daily devotions

In very simple terms, prayer is, speaking to God. The most common form of prayer is petitioning (for self/family) followed by interceding for others and finally thanksgiving/praise. This is all good and well deserving.

During Mass recently, the choir sang a beautiful hymn, which gave very clear instructions on what to pray for. This article is inspired by that hymn and elaborates on 3 things we need to pray for:

1) To SEE God more clearly

“If you know me, you will know my Father too. From this moment you know Him and have seen Him”.

John 14:7

This Bible verse clearly states that we must first know God in order to see Him. SEE, in this case, is not physically seeing but recognizing or perceiving or sensing God's proximity to us. It's about tuning ourselves to God, similar to tuning our radios/TVs to the waves of the channel we want to hear.

Let's pray for the grace to spend quality time with God because that's the only way we can get to know Him. By knowing Him, we can see him.

2) To FOLLOW God more closely

"If anyone wants to be a follower of mine, let him renounce himself, take up his cross and follow me"

Matthew 16:24

Narrow and challenging is the path that leads to heaven. The challenge comes from the fact that we have to carry our crosses. But by taking up our crosses we have already won half the battle. To win the whole battle, we have to successfully reach our destination with the cross still on our shoulders. Only then we can victoriously claim to have followed God.

Let's pray for the strength to be pure, holy and perfect as our heavenly Father is because imitating Him is a sure way of following Him.

3) To LOVE God more dearly

"Whoever holds to my commandments and keeps them is the one who loves me"

John 14:21

Jesus doesn't mince His words. He conveys this same message a number of times. At another time Jesus says, not the one who says, Father, Father, but the one who does the will of God will enter the kingdom of heaven. We have a very high bar to beat if we claim to love Him.

Let's pray for the gift of obedience in our hearts. Obeying is a sure shot way of expressing our love for God.

Conclusion

Majority of our prayers are for safety, security, wealth, health and sustenance. It's about time we increase the quality of our prayers by asking for heavenly favors in addition to our usual prayers. Because Jesus has said, seek first the Kingdom of God and everything else will be added unto you. Pray for the grace to See, Follow and Love God more clearly, closely and dearly.
